The new Chairman of the Imo Internal Revenue Service (IIRS), Mr Remigus Okoye says that the era of tax default in Imo state is over, as the agency will put in place professional mechanisms to check the trend. The Chairman noted this on Monday in Owerri during his first briefing to staff of the Service on Monday, 11 May 2020, after receiving a handover note from his predecessor, Mr Emma Ononaku.
He pointed out that while the “average income earner” are the major culprit in tax default, some business establishments were also in the habit of evading tax.
The new boss has given an assurance that IIRS under him would work towards boosting the Internally Generated Revenue of the State. He therefore solicited for the cooperation of every staff member (giving Government their best) to achieve this goal. He added that he will not tolerate any sabotage from any worker.
He further advised the citizens of Imo state to pay their taxes regularly, which he noted as a sure way for any state to survive under this present economic condition.
